Breast cancer at 37

by: Maria on Mon, May 21 2007

I was diagnosed with DCIS days before my 37th birthday. I was in shock and was fearful of that word cancer. Once I became educated on breast cancer I felt more reassurance that I could beat this disease.

What I couldn’t understand is why I got breast cancer I work out 6 days/week and eat well. I thought for sure that I would test positive for the BRCA 1-2 gene, but I didn’t. I stopped questioning why I got it and immediately jumped onto survival mode. I was going to do everything possible to fight this and live for my 2 sons and husband.

I had the best care at a breast care center. Thanks to my doctors who helped me through the toughest journey in my life. I celebrated my 2 year anniversary of being cancer free and it feels great. I had a right mastectomy with breast reconstruction and you couldn’t even tell.

I have not let the cancer defeat me, but rather made it into a positive change. I live my life to the fullest and experience everything that I want . Breast cancer has taught me that anything is possible. I feel fortunate to be a survivor and to have experienced such a live changing event.
